Ugaadi is a festival celebrated all across the Deccan regions of India with much fun and fervour. The word Ugaadi has originated from the Sanskrit words – ‘yug’ means era and ‘aadi’ means beginning. So it marks the beginning of the new era.

When is Ugaadi Celebrated?

It is the first day of the Hindu month Chaitra, the first month of Panchanga calendar. It is celebrated as the New Year by the people of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Thelangaana. Even this day, which falls in the months of March-April, is the New Year for the people of Maharashtra and is popularly known as Gudi Padwa. People of different states follow different rituals and customs on this day. Ugaadi rituals in Karnataka and Thelugu States (Andhra Pradesh and Thelangaana) are almost similar with little differences.

Common Rituals Associated With Ugaadi

The auspicious occasion of Ugaadi is associated with Lord Brahma, the creator of the Universe. All the elements of nature along with days, months are believed to be created by Lord Brahma. As it falls on the onset of the spring, it marks the commencement of healthy and prosperous New Year. Many rituals are associated with the festival of Ugaadi.

The various customs of Ugaadi festival are:

2. Panchanga Sravanam – Recitation of Almanac (New Year Calendar)

Ugaadi Panchchagna Sravanam is the astrological predictions by Brahmin or pundit for the Hindu year. Panchanga Sravanam Ugaadi is known as Sri Durmukhinama Samvatsara-Ugaadhi and the Hindu year is called D Nama Samvatsaram.

Panchagna Sravanam – Recitation of Almanac (New Year Calendar)

Ugaadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon’s orbit.

There is a strange thing about the practices of the different sects of Brahmins. Although they are all Brahmins, various differences in the lineage can be traced among them. These differences are reflected in their particular calendars, where the months and dates vary.

Some pundits calculate the dates of the calendar according to the lunar system and some do it according to the solar system. Despite the fact that all of them are Brahmins, the New Year varies among the various sects. Hence, there is a Thamil New Year’s Day, a Thelugu New Year’s Day and a New Year’s Day different from that observed in the almanac of Northern India.

The panchangasravanam-recitation of almanac (new year calendar) is done by the officiating priest at the temples. The presiding chief during PanchangaSravanam reminds the listener of Lord Brahma, who is the creator of the universe. Predictions for wealth and prosperity are read out along with influence of the constellations on the various aspects of life. The listeners at the end of the panchagnasravanam-recitaion of almanac (new year calendar), seek the blessings of the priest.

History Associated With the Celebration of Ugaadi

The word Ugaadi also known as Yugaadi has been derived by combination of two words Yuga meaning age and aadi meaning beginning of a new age. Yugaadi refers to the age today we are living in which is the kali Yuga which is believed to have been started after Lord Krishna left the world. The event has been described by Maharshi Vedavyasa as “Yesmin Krishno divamvyataha, Tasmat eeva pratipannam Kaliyugam” and it begins starts on the midnight of 17 or 18 February. In the luni-solar calendar the festival falls on the bright half of the Chaitra month of India on the “Chaitra Sudhdha Padyaami” and it falls mostly in April or March as per the Gregorian calendar.

Yugaadi is celebrated after calibrations from the 12th century, Bhaskara II. It begins after the first new moon and on the sunrise after the sun crosses the celestial equator from south to North. On this day the Su enters the initial point of Aries. Many people also celebrate the festival on the next morning as the day is believed to start in India after the sun rise. Like in 2015, though the spring equinox began on 20th of March, the Yugaadi festival was celebrated on the next day that is on 20th of March. It is also celebrated in some parts of America.

8. Traditional to Predict the New Year

Ugaadi marks a change in the moon’s lunar orbit and also the beginning of the Hindu lunar calendar. It is a day when mantras are chanted by the Brahmins and is an important tradition to predict the new year. An important aspect of this is Panchanga Shravanam or hearing of the Panchanga.

Tradition To Predict The New Year:

Panchanga Shravanam or the tradition to predict the new year is done by the priests at the temples. The presiding or officiating priest reminds all the participants of Brahma, the creator of the universe, before reading out annual forecasts as predicted in the Panchanga. The reading of Panchanga includes the reading of other Tidhis (prosperity and wealth) during the year and ends in the forecast of the different spheres of the social life and the effects of the various constellations on them.

According to the scriptures, the benefits reaped by the reader and the listener are equivalent to having a dip in the holy waters of the Ganges. The people hearing the Pangagna thank the reader, seek his blessings and offer new clothes to him.

Traditionally Panchanga Shravanam or listening to the yearly calendar was done at the Town square or the temples but nowadays, with the advent of modern technology, the priest scholar can be seen on the television and people listen to the Ugaadipanchangam preditions from the comfort of their homes.

Join us on World Hindu & Health Instruction ( https://t.me/WorldHinduHealth )

The festival of Ugaadi is one of the most auspicious times for undertaking any activity in the Deccan part of the country since it is the Thelugu New Year. Ugaadi comes from Sanskrit word Yugaadi; Yug meaning era, and aadi meaning beginning, thereby signifying the beginning of a new year. It is believed that Lord Brahma- the God of creation in Hindu trinity started creating the world on this day. This is also the time when spring sets in filling the face of earth with flora all around.

Observance

The date of this festival is determined according to the Saka calendar and is frequently changing according to the solar cycles. The Ugaadi falls on the first day of the month of chaitra which generally occurs in the month of March or April.

It is perversely adhered to by wide diasporas of people in states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Thelangaana, etc. and coincides with the festivals of GudiPadwa celebrated in Maharashtra, Thapna in Rajasthan and ChetiChand in Sindh which are celebrated on the same day. The Hindus of Indonesia and Bali also celebrate their new year on the same day.

Preparations and Celebration

  • Like any other festival in the country, preparations for this festival also begin almost a week in advance with people cleaning and decorating their houses, buying new clothes, sweets, gifts, etc.
  • Cow dung water is splashed outside houses and colourful floral designs are painted on walls.
  • Front doors are decorated with Rangoli, Mango leaves and red earth as a symbol to welcome all friendly passersby.
  • On the day of the festival, the rituals begin right at the break of dawn with each one having a head bath after massaging sesame oil all over the body.
  • Temples and houses are decorated with mango leaves and jasmine flowers
  • This is followed by all members gathering together and praying to the almighty seeking his blessings for a prosperous year ahead. Various other rituals are performed in the puja like:
  • Immersing God idols in sesame oil
  • Performing aarthi and the senior most lady of the family applying kum-kum on the foreheads of all members.
  • Offering flowers of Neem, Tamarind and Jasmine to Gods
  • The steps followed in the puja are; Abhisheka, Alankara, Naivedya and Mangalarathi.
  • Oota is offered as meals to Gods and then the same is had as Prasadam.
  • Chanting traditional mantras, conducting havans and asking pundits for future predictions are also common practices followed by many on this day. The Panchanga Shravanam is also done at the temples by the priests.
  • Prayers are also offered to the Sun and then Vepapoota Pachchadi (pickle made from Neem flowers) is had in an empty stomach.
  • Later reading of the traditional Panchanga by the elders and respected of the society also takes place at an informal social ceremony called Panchanga Sravanam. Traditionally it was done at temples but with onset of modern technology it can also be heard through radios and televisions in the comfort of ones houses.
  • Food too occupies a special place as sumptuous traditional meals comprising of various dishes are prepared in gatherings and enjoyed by all. Dishes that are prepared often have symbolic significance. For eg;
  • A dish called Bevu Bella is prepared from the paste of tamarind, neem buds, jiggery and mango. The sweet and sour taste of the dish represents the variety of happy and sad tastes of life.
  • Several other dishes are also prepared like the puliogure and holige (obbattu) in Karnataka or similarly pulihora and bobbatlu in Thelugu States (Andra Pradesh and Thelangaana) and puran polis or sweet rotis in Maharahstra.
  • Organising Kavi Samelans or poetry competitions is another significant feature of this festival. Budding poets and other people come together to discuss various topics with each other ranging from politics to fashion statements through the art of poetry.

All these rituals and activities clubbed together with the vigor of the festival and beautiful weather give many shades to the festival of Ugaadi and hence fill hearts of all that are a part of it with contentment and joy.
