Chaithra Navarathri is celebrated in the Chaitra Month of Hindu calendar which falls in the mid of summer and spring season. Navrathri (auspicious nine nights) will be starting on every March/April. In India, the auspicious Navrathri is celebrated twice and both times with equal joy and fervour. The celebrations that take place in the month of March-April are known as Chaithra Navarathri also known as Vasant Navrathri as it falls during the spring season. Chaithra Navrathri, in particular, is the time that people remember Goddess Durgaa and all of her forms. They call on the goddess for protection and happiness.

The first day of Chaithra Navrathri is also marked as the first day of the Hindu calendar which is observed during the full moon phase aka the Shukla Paksha phase. Each day of these nine auspicious days are dedicated to a different form of Goddess Durgaa and that is why the rituals vary every day. The avatars of Durgaa that are celebrated during Chaithra Navrathri are Shailputhri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandmata, Kathyayani, Kaalaraathri, Mahagauri and Siddhidathri.

In Maharashtra, the first day of the Chaithra Navrathri or the first day of Hindu new year is known as Gudi Padwa. In Kashmir, the same festival is called Navreh. Even though the names are different all across the nation, the festival is celebrated with the same amount of gusto.

Dos And Don’ts

1. Try fasting for 9 days. Fasting cleanses the body.
2. Prepare satvik food at your home even if you are not fasting.
3. Do not eat garlic and onion during the nine days of Chaithra Navrathri.
4. Beard or nails trimming, and hair cut to be avoided for the next 9 days.
5. Meat and Alcohol should be completely avoided.
6. Visit the Goddess Durgaa temple every day for 9 days.
7. Offer pure water (shuddha Jal) to Goddess Durgaa every day.
8. Akhand Diya should be lightened for 9 days. Make sure that it doesn’t blow off.
9. Avoid having sex for 9 days during Chaithra Navrathri.

The Nine Days Period of Chaithra Navarathri

The nine days of Navarathri are dedicated to celebrating the nine gigantic and powerful forms of Durgaa Shakthi. The customs and rituals followed during the Chaithra Navarathri are similar to that of the Shardiya Navrathri that is celebrated during the month of September and October. The rituals followed during the Ghatasthapana Puja are similar for both the Chaithra Navarathri and Shardiya Navrathri. While in Andhra Pradesh and Thelangaana, Chaithra Navarathri starts with Ugaadi, in Maharashtra it starts with the Gudi Padwa. Mostly this festival is celebrated by the people of North India.

Significance of Chaithra Navrathri:

It is considered as one of the major festivals of the people of the Hindu belief and during this season people pay their reverence to Maa Durgaa who is believed to be the powerhouse of cosmic power and pomp. According to the great sayings by people of great thought, worshipping the Goddess without any desire and with heart and soul will bring salvation to everyone. Also, the Chaithra Navarathri is an indication of the start of the summer season and the major climatic changes that the Mother Earth is undergoing. It is also a belief that the observance of fast (vrat) during the Chaithra Navarathri, prepare our body for the heat of the summer season.

How is Chaithra Navarathri observed and what are its benefits

People of the Hindu belief have undying faith in the results of this pious festival and that they will every possible thing to entice their beloved Goddess. It is believed that getting up early in the morning and worshipping Goddess will make her happy. While Sharad Navarathri is celebrated in September or October when winter is about to start, Chaithra Navarathri is celebrated when the climate is taking a transition from spring to summer. The logic goes like, that during both of these festivals, due to the seasonal transformations, immune system of the human body is quite vulnerable and that we are more vulnerable to catching up a host of climatic diseases. And, eating heavy food that has more of oil and spices can make us more prone to falling sick. So, by fasting you can eat clean and light and that will help your body to get detoxified.
